Emma is a carry-system that allows for versatility between sizes, occasion, and carry orientation, providing better organization and duration in the life of the user.
In the tradition of high fashion purses named after style icons and inspirations,
this product is named after Emma Stone, who acted as both my ideal user and muse of this project.
FOUR FORMS, ONE BAG
problems with carry solutions
ideation
I began with sketching different shapes, connections, folding methods, strap placements, etc. I also explored how to combine different modules into a unit that looks good and also functions well in every orientation.
Mockups
I found that it was most helpful to ideate through mockups. These craft foam/cardboard/duct tape/glue mockups helped me get a sense of what these bags would feel like and how they would transform from one orientation to another.
Fabrication
I learned a great deal by doing every step of the fabrication myself: from buying the leather and lining material, to making the pattern, to sewing, to designing the hardware.

HOW IT GOES TOGETHER
“I need this stuff all the time.”
In the smallest orientation, you always know where high priority items are located. Having them in their own unit allows you to take only what you need for any given activity easily.
“I will probably need this in my day.”
With an over the shoulder bag that covers most needs, less likely to buy more others frivolously. For those people who want to cut down on their consumption, Emma can replace many items in a closet.
“ I might use this sometime.”
For the days when you must carry many different items, the backpack form allows you to carry everything you need, while maintaining logical organization.
Because the clutch holds the “all the time” items, and the over the shoulder holds the “sometimes” items, even when fully assembled, there is still organization.
Easy removal of sections allows user to take just what they need. One strap allows user to change orientation at any time without using extra parts.
